I find that after SMC reset the charging often stops again after a few minutes when laptop is in use and the battery is low. These spikes may trigger the adapter's over-voltage protection circuits which, similar to the temperature sensor, will shut off the adapter to prevent damage to the component circuitry. Don't go running off to the nearest Apple Store just yet.
