Never fails to detect upon reboot. The display remains dark, my laptop recognize ( 13" Macbook Pro 2015 model ) it but the display wont show the desktop ( or anything else ). I had earlier used a samsung with the mac mini, and straight out of the box, it matched with the samsung. Can only have 1 external display at a time. I'd recommend taking in your Macbook Pro to the Apple store at that point to get diagnosed. SMC reset, regular restart, nothing. I was also advised to use a HDMI connection but that I would have to get a connector.
