Pressing it on the left hand side (where my finger naturally reaches to) almost never works. Although I also find myself at times missing letters while typing it's not terrible.

Have you checked to make sure that Text-to-Speech isn't bound to that key? Choose Apple menu > System Preferences, click Accessibility, then click Mouse & Trackpad. Choose Apple menu > System Preferences, click Dictation & Speech, then click Text to Speech. Choose Apple menu > System Preferences, click Keyboard, then click Input Sources.
