The problem is that if I have a game or similar program started while my headset is plugged in, if I unplug it, I will get no sound. Until someone suggests a better solution, here's a hack that seems to work: once you have a proper, working setting with the Audio MIDI setup, prevent it from being changed by Disable the default speakers (this should set the head set to default), then try a sound.
