Hope this helps someone....I know it's a super old post and is marked as solved, but not everyone was able to solve it the way previously mentioned so I thought I Ubuntu 12.04 LTS. I had the same problem with the default installation of the new Pulse Audio controller. Chrome (Version 49.0.2623.112 (64-bit)) still does not work, though on full moon nights or something else random it'll send sound through the built-in analog audio on the laptop.
